Introduction to Solve General Applications of Percent

A black lab dog looking up hungrily at a pouch full of cherry tomatoes Bingo needs to go on a special diet, and finding his new food will require an understanding of percents.
Karen noticed her black lab, Bingo, wasn't feeling well. He wouldn't eat his dinner for several nights in a row, and he didn't want to play. So Karen took him to the vet, where she learned that Bingo has a digestive condition that requires a special diet. The vet told her that 25% of his diet must be protein. Now Karen needs to calculate whether a certain brand of dog food has a suitable protein content. To figure this out, she'll need to be able to solve basic percent equations. Read on to find out more about working with percents.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this section, you will be able to:
  • Translate and solve basic percent equations
  • Solve applications of percent
  • Find percent increase and percent decrease
Before you get started in this module, try a few practice problems and review prior concepts.

Examples

  1. Translate and solve: [latex]\frac{3}{4}[/latex] of [latex]x[/latex] is [latex]24[/latex].If you missed this problem, review [link].
  2. Simplify: [latex]\left(4.5\right)\left(2.38\right)[/latex].If you missed this problem, review [link].
  3. Solve: [latex]3.5=0.7n[/latex].If you missed this problem, review [link].
